Super Bingo Extravaganza (SBE) came to Grand Forks AFB in 2007 with the FSS Deputy Director Mr. Donald Fellers. It was a program that he began in 1989 at Columbus AFB as a Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Chief (which is now the FSS for all of you newbies). While stationed in Mississippi, the Wing Commander asked him to design a new program. He wanted something BIG and something he had never seen before. It was a tall order, but the BIG idea hit Mr. Fellers when he saw a commercial for the Super Bowl on television.
"Finding [Super Bowl] tickets was much harder back then," says Mr. Fellers. "You couldn't just go on the computer and Google it". His team found a company to work with and "Super Base Bingo" as it was named then, was born.
SBE has always been a Bingo program, but the merchandise given away in-between games was quite modest in the beginning. The first year they gave away t-shirts and hats. When Mr. Fellers and the program moved to Lajes Air Station in the Azores two years later, they added TWO autographed collectable football cards. "People were ecstatic", says Fellers, "OMG an autographed card"!
Lajes added team jerseys and the auction-- if someone wins an item that they don't want, they can put it up for cash bids. Anarchy ensued. "People went crazy, because having a jersey on the island made you a stud", says Mr. Fellers. The event was so popular people lined up to purchase tickets at 4 or 5am and they even piped the auction through the loud speakers in base housing!
From Lajes, the program moved with Mr. Fellers to Pope AFB in North Carolina. The first year they only had a couple hundred guests, but once the word got out that they were going "BIG TIME" which Mr. Fellers credits to Dave McCurdy, the club manager, the program took off! Dave's idea was to replace the t-shirts and hats with real collectables-- AUTOGRAPHED MERCHANDISE such as helmets, footballs, photos, and jerseys.
Eventually both Mr. Fellers and Dave McCurdy would find themselves working together at Grand Forks AFB where Mr. Fellers hosted SBE from 2007 until his retirement in 2013. His BIG personality and sports knowledge was an enormous asset to the program. His talents went unmatched until 2016 when CMSgt Kevin "Loud Mouth" Labrie landed at Grand Forks. Labrie brought back the hype with his competitive spirit, numerous outfit changes, and game-show-host approach. The audience loves his knowledge and energy. Even though Labrie is now retired and living in Arizona, he continues to host SBE as a contractor.
The program that began as one of Mr. Feller's BIG IDEAS still includes the coveted trip to the Super Bowl, but it has evolved to include over $25,000 in authentic sports memorabilia. Profits made from the event allow the 319 FSS to provide programs, equipment, and trips to the Airman and families of Grand Forks Air Force Base that may not otherwise be funded.
